| History of RVICS and the Founders desire to serve in their retirement In 1977 our founders, Henry and Margaret Schaeffer, retired with time on their hands and a motor home in which to travel. They had a strong desire to make their retirement years productive. With this in mind, RVICS (Roving Volunteers In Christ’s Service) was organized. The ministry has been built on a good scriptural foundation, using the text James 1:22, “Be ye doers of the Word and not hearers only.” James 2:14 and Ephesians 2:10 are also important reminders for members. The RVICS projects are planned on a seasonal basis with the first project scheduled to begin the Monday after Labor Day. Each project lasts from 3-½ to 4 weeks. Every effort is made to schedule work projects in the warmer climates during the winter months and in cooler climates the balance of the time. To qualify for a project, a ministry must be a legal non-profit Christian organization. The missionary couples donate their labor, provide their own living expenses and accident insurance and furnish their own tools when practical. The project host furnishes all materials needed and a site for RV parking with full hookups at no cost to the missionaries. Most RVICS couples are retirees and, as such, work a more limited, but productive work schedule. The men work 6 hours daily Monday through Wednesday and 3 hours on Thursday for a total of 21 hours per week. The women work 3 hours daily, Monday through Thursday, for a total of 12 hours per week. The balance of the week is free time and can be used for sight-seeing, relaxing, or other activities. RVICS is non-denominational and couples are encouraged to go to the church of their choice on Sundays. Each working day is started with devotion and prayer in a group circle. Each week there are planned activities including Bible study, hymn sing, and table games. The Project Host is requested to furnish a Bible Teacher and a room and, when available, a piano. The RVICS Ministry will not knowingly serve any organization which is connected with or supports the National Council of Churches or the World Council of Churches. Testimonies are available upon request. More Complete Information on “About Us” Page |
